I may not be a Blues fan but......

...I think they were robbed on Sunday. OK, they made a lot of silly mistakes and having a prop sent off probably wasn't the cleverest move, but I thought they were the better side and deserved to win. Leicester were predictable and disappointing.
When, with the Blues encamped on the Tiger's 5 metre line, I saw Deacon's foot come in at the ruck (having already entered it from the side) I couldn't believe that no official saw it. There should have been a penalty awarded and it highly likely that Blair would have kicked it. Game over!

'Why the Anger still lives on at Ponty'

I read the article by Peter Jackson in The Mail today and, to be honest, I don't know how I feel. Yes, I remember those glory days only too well - the atmophere in the ground was immense even if the crowds never reached 10,000 as Sam Simon stated. We were never a 'big' club or a fashionable club but we were, and still are, an 'honest' club and we gained the respect of the oppostion by playing fast, exciting, open rugby.
The change to regionalism was not met with universal support at Ponty as, like elsewhere, we were parochial and club-orientated, but slowly the Celtic Warriors won us over (despite the shenanigans of one Leighton Samuel). Yes, the team was improving, the support was growing and the results were coming. The take-over then demise of the region hit us all hard but.....
.......we did contribute to our own downfall and Sam Simon, who was on the Board of Directors at that time, must shoulder some of the blame. How could the Board take the club into a 'marriage' with Bridgend knowing that we owed so much money? They hid the true picture from the WRU, our new partner, Leighton Samuel, the players and the supporters. It was a terrible thing to do and, no the fans at Ponty will never forget nor forgive.

A Regional Revival?

Revival? Well, not quite as that would suggest the regions were good then bad now good again and that's going a bit too far as no region has hit the heights yet. But I am pleased that the three in the Heineken Cup won even if two of the victories were hardly convincing. Still, to win in France as the Blues did must count for something and should give them cofidence for next weekend when they face an angry Leicester team, albeit at home. The Scarlets played some good rugby but let in two silly tries at the end and so the score flattered London Irish. As for the Ospreys, oh I don't know what to make of them! They have such talented players but still lack leadership and direction. Nice to see Shane Williams on top form though - will he get the nod for the Autumn Internationals or will Gareth Jenkins prefer a Stradey player?

All I ask....

....is that referees do their job properly! Is that a tall order? Well, it would seem so after watching that inept display at Sardis Road yesterday.
This is not a one-eyed gripe because we lost to Newport because, in some ways, we gave them the game rather than them winning it. No, this is a genuine plea for an improvement in the standard of refereeing in the Premier League. For goodness sake, this is only one step below the Magner's League so we should expect, no demand, a reasonably high quality of officials but, overall, the batch we've 'suffered' this season are sadly lacking in certain departments.
Now I know referees have a difficult job and they should be able to rely on their touch judges for assistance (whic doesn;t always happen), but there are a couple of basic areas which, if they get those right would transform games.

Newport at Home

I don't know what our team is for Saturday yet but I think, whoever is chosen, they will have to play at 110% to grind out a win against this handy Newport lot. That's not being negative, just realistic.
So far this season, we have shown glimpses of our ability but I'm afraid, all too often, we have let ourselves down by making stupid errors. Against a strong pack like Newport's, our front five will need to be awesome in defence and attack and, no disrespect to Chief, his days of holding the pack together are sadly over. OK, we've got Nathan Strong (who is a strong presence, if you'll forgive the pun) but, with 2 of our 2nd row out injured, everything actually rests on the shoulders of the young lad, Damien Welch.

The Regional Debate

While this may be a Ponty Blog, it is difficult to ignore the issues surrounding the regions in Wales as they are supposed to be our future.
There is no way I want to rehash the debate over the demise of the Celtic Warriors and the pain that was felt in the valleys at the way we were stabbed in the back by the WRU and the other four regions who clubbed together to buy Leighton Samuel out only to close down the Warriors, thus releasing more money for themselves. And just when the team were getting results too - could it have been jealousy?

Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear

Not a lot I can say after yesterday's woeful performance. I didn't get to Pandy Park until half time and it all looked so promising then, despite us being behind.
So where did it all go wrong? Everywhere, the die-hard supporters around me felt and I can't argue with their assessment.
Rumours of problems between certain players this week, if true, may have contributed, but to be honest I feel so depressed today. The team is better than yesterday's performance suggested but I really don't know where they go from here.

Rumour

I've been told that Chris Dicomidis broke his arm while 'wrestling' with Chief!! I believe it too as Dale is a feisty fellow, although mellower now than when he first came to Ponty. His mother has always said that we were the making of him as she'd got to the stage where she didn't know what to do with him!
